The Bruce McDonnell Emergency Fund
The summer of 2005 was hard for the McDonnell Family. In June, their eldest son, Bruce, lost his long battle with cancer. One day after his service, his father, George, was diagnosed with lung cancer.
The McDonnell's became intimately familiar with Memorial's North Star Lodge. "We felt very supported by everyone there," Dolores McDonnell remembers, "they treated us with such kindness and compassion". Caring first for her son and now her husband, North Star became a place of comfort.
After George finished his radiation therapy, the family was inspired to find a way to keep their son's memory alive. "Bruce was a very loving person," Dolores shared. "He would have wanted to help others."
With the help of Kay Maples, Clinical Resource Manager, the "Bruce McDonnell Emergency Fund" was established at North Star Lodge. It's available to any North Star patient in need. "Kay disperses the funds when she learns of a need." Dolores adds, "It's exactly what Bruce would want."
North Star Lodge's Emergency Fund helps cancer patients undergoing treatment, assisting those who are without money for transportation, or need support for lodging, food or utilities. These patients are usually ineligible for help from the Department of Social and Health Services, or are pending eligibility and need a short term grant to ensure they are receiving proper treatment. To contribute to the Emergency Fund, contact the Memorial Foundation at (509) 576-5794.
