Argus Insurance: Investing Locally
"Giving back to the communities where we live and do business is a part of our corporate culture and vision statement," says Alan Cottle, president, Argus Insurance. The partners of Argus Insurance have been supporting The Memorial Foundation, individually and as a corporation, since 1983 when the company was formed.
Cottle says that many of the people who make up the ownership of Argus are local people who grew up in the four communities where they have offices: Yakima, Ellensburg, Sunnyside and Moses Lake. "The community honors us by doing business with us and we are committed to giving back by investing in programs like YouthWorks through The Memorial Foundation," Cottle says.
"Supporting YouthWorks is a great way for us to connect with younger people in the community," he says. "It plants the seed of giving back to our community to the younger generation." Cottle says he's impressed with the involvement and dedication he sees from today's kids.
"From the High School Boys' Pageants to spirit chains and other fundraisers, it's great to see the kids having fun and connecting to the philanthropic work being done in the community around them," he says. "They are making a great difference in raising money and awareness for children with special health care needs," he says.
Outstanding! Yakima Valley Credit Union
We are honored to have received a sponsorship for YouthWorks and The Follies from the Yakima Valley Credit Union. This donation helps fund programs and services at Children's Village and Memorial's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Outstanding Safeway!
The Memorial Foundation would like to thank Safeway
customers and employees for their continued support of breast cancer
services at 'Ohana and North Star Lodge. Safeway's commitment to breast
cancer care programs has helped thousands of women and families in Central
Washington. During the month of Oct. 2007, Safeway customers and employees
raised over $43,000 at each of their Yakima stores! Because of their
support, we are able to provide mammograms, state-of-the-art treatments,
support services, and more.
Gift Annuities Benefit Both Community and Our Donors
Supporters of The Memorial Foundation have long been committed community investors. Now, by choosing to invest in a charitable gift annuity with The Memorial Foundation, investors can make a difference to the Yakima Valley and benefit financially in the process.
"It's an investment in the community," says Jack Silvers about his charitable gift annuity with Memorial Foundation. "It's a 'win-win' way of making a gift. I receive regular, dependable payments for as long as I live, and after that, the Foundation will invest my gift in improving healthcare services in the Yakima Valley."
There are other reasons that Jack likes charitable gift annuities. One is the tax-advantaged income he receives. A portion of the income from his gift annuity is tax-free. In addition, a gift annuity funded with appreciated securities can also help legally avoid paying capital gains tax.
Jack's family was early settlers in Buena, and Jack is steeped in the history of the Yakima Valley. "With years of experience in the leadership of the Washington State Grange, Jack's background and wealth of experience in organization management informed his discussion with me," comments Anne Caffery, CEO of The Memorial Foundation. "He became a donor and an advisor."
The charitable income tax deduction the donor receives for doing a gift annuity is yet another benefit for this "win-win" gift. The deduction can be taken in the current year, and any portion not used can be rolled over and used in future years.
