The YouthWorks high school pageants are a vital part of our youth philanthropy program to raise funds for children's healthcare programs at Virginia Mason Memorial and Children's Village in Yakima.

The money raised benefits programs that serve kids, including Virginia Mason Memorial's neonatal intensive care unit, a regional facility serving the five-county region that is Central Washington.

Each high school student body nominates the contestants. The competition gets started in November and include a tour of Children's Village, along with a number of fundraising events each contestant does on their own.

Each contestant dedicates a huge amount of time raising money and rehearsing for their pageant, a two-hour spectacle that combines dance, humorous skits, honoring special people in their lives, on-stage interview questions and the final crowning of the winner.

Criteria for evaluating the contestants are:

  • Teacher evaluation
  • Funds raised
  • Pageant night
    • Creativity in each segment performance
    • Talent
    • On-stage interview

On pageant night, contestants are evaluated by a panel of volunteer judges, members of our community.

The Memorial Foundation YouthWorks program sponsors these annual high school pageants.

The YouthWorks Council was created in 2007 to promote the involvement of youth in philanthropy and volunteerism. Being a YouthWorks Council member has many benefits:

  • Have fun with friends while doing great things for your community
  • Develop leadership skills
  • Gain valuable volunteer experience
  • Learn about philanthropy and children's healthcare needs in our community

Memorial's Youth fundraising program is designed to empower young people in the Yakima Valley to use their ideas, talents and sweat equity to raise funds for local projects supporting children with special healthcare needs.

Youth fundraising includes a variety of student-organized philanthropic projects to raise money and awareness for children with special healthcare needs, including:

  • High School Pageants
  • Other fundraisers

This program enhances school unity and fosters community involvement. Since all funds raised stay local, students see the positive effects of their efforts right here in the Yakima Valley. Funds raised are distributed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Children's Village and health outreach programs for Valley children.
